Open Science Regional Workshop – Enhancing and Strengthening Regional Open Science Implementation Mechanism

UNESCO Jakarta, in partnership with the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC) and the Science Technology Engineering Innovation Policy Asia and the Pacific Network (STEPAN), is organizing a three-day hybrid workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, UNESCO Jakarta, in partnership with the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC) and the Science Technology Engineering Innovation Policy Asia and the Pacific Network (STEPAN), is organizing a three-day hybrid workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 8-10 March 2023. The workshop aims to enhance and strengthen the implementation mechanisms of Open Science in the region by discussing public policy updates, increasing investment, and improving the legal and institutional system for open R&D.

International Open Science strategic partners will share their experiences and challenges on implementing Open Science in their region/country during the workshop. It will consist of sharing sessions, facilitated discussions, and breakout groups around key topics. The workshop is being organized with the support of the Malaysia-UNESCO Cooperation Programme (MUCP), funded by the Malaysia Funds-in-Trust project with the UNESCO cluster office based in Indonesia.

The workshop’s objective is to foster a common understanding of Open Science in the Asia-Pacific region, provide recommendations for promoting Open Science implementation mechanisms, and encourage sharing of knowledge management practices, open science policy information, and relevant data among member states through the STEPAN platform.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity for the Asia-Pacific region to collaborate and develop a shared understanding of Open Science to overcome the challenges faced in various dimensions. Open Science is a critical component of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting regional collaboration in solving regional and global issues. It also enables greater potential for South-South collaboration and offers opportunities for low- and middle-income countries to participate in significant scientific research.
